
The study of patterns of contacts between police and people with serious mental illness in southwestern Ontario confirms that police officers do not have the resources to appropriately assist this population. Research supports that most of the needs of the seriously mentally ill are best met outside a hospital setting. However, appropriate resources need to be in place in the community to ensure that this population receives the best possible range of treatment options.
